Why Urinetown is a good choice for a high school musical

Urinetown: The Musical opens at White Bear Lake High School
Jill Hengel Lindman

Irreverent, satirical and filled with sassy, snappy musical numbers, is it no wonder that Urinetown: The Musical resonates with the teenager cast at White Bear Lake High School? As high school students they have witnessed first-hand corporate irresponsibility, political corruption and the woes of bureaucracy. In a scant few years, this is the world they will inherit. In a sense, it seems that Urinetown was created for them.

In addition to satire, the musical has great fun spoofing such Broadway hits as Fiddler on the Roof and Les Miserables. Charles Shaughnessy, a member of the Broadway cast of Urinetown also notes that Urinetown is the perfect high school musical. His reasons can be found in his blog.

Urinetown: The Musical is co-directed by Wendy Souja and Rob Sutherland. The orchestra is directed by Jeremy Rockford. It opens Friday, November 13 at White Bear Lake's North Campus Theatre. Show times are: Friday 11/13 at 7 p.m., Saturday 11/14 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Thursday 11/19 through Saturday 11/21 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door and at The Nest, 4742 Washington Square in downtown White Bear Lake.
