In a campy "BurlyCute" production at Denver's new Crossroads Theatre, Cora Vette (aka Reyna VonVett) leads her all-female cast in an irreverent tribute to "Blowin' J's" and "Vipers." Reefer Mania! Denver's Gone to Pot runs until July 3.

VonVett, decked all out in sparkly green bustiers and flared skirts, belts out songs with the gusto of Bette Midler. After starring in Mamma Mia for three years in Vegas, she moved to Denver and started "BurlyCute Presents." She also designs and makes the costumes for her BurlyCuties. In this BurlyCute "vaudevillesque pot opera", Von Vette is a naughty coquette named—what else?—Mary Jane.

David Nehls, music director for the Arvada Center, arranges and accompanies the more than 30 songs that include such reefer tunes as "Reefer Man;" "When I Get Low, I Get High;" and "Save the Roach for Me." Interspersed with the singing and dancing are video clips from the 1938 government-sponsored anti-marijuana film Reefer Madness, underscoring the show's dichotomy between madness and mania.

This is an audience-participation show. People are invited to shout out, whistle and make noise, so the evening is just plain fun. To encourage a lively audience, everyone receives a wrist band at the box office that gets free admission before, during the 20-minute intermission and again after the show at Cervantes Other Side bar across the street.

Crossroads is a city-owned theatre at 2590 Washington Stree in the historic Five Points Intersection in the Curtis Neighborhood. The light rail stops right in front of the theatre at the 27th & Welton station. There's also free garage parking behind the theatre. Tickets for Reefer Mania cost $18. Call 303-295-1883 or visit DenversGoneToPot.com. Shows run Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
