The National Pastime Theater at 4139 N. Broadway presents Naked July, a series of 5 shows running weekly this month. I saw The Girlie Q Variety Hour. It's a vaudeville styled variety show with about 10 acts. Girlie-Q Productions is produced and directed by JT Newman, aka Ms. Bea Haven and directed by Shifra Werch . She has been putting up shows since 2003, making them the among the oldest burlesque entertainment companies in Chicago.
The pre and post show entertainment featured a Jazz Vocalist, Rebbeca Sullivan backed by an amazing duo of Chris White on piano and Maya Jensen on bass. They are, all three, representing the best of Chicago's professional musicians.
There are two reasons to see this show and I am not refering to two of the many breasts you will see in these acts.
The first standout is Plucky Rosenthal. She is the bees knees, the cat's meow. An in the flesh re-incarnation of a Borscht Belt comedian. She charms the crowd with her great voice and ukulele accompanied jokes. She has a wonderly soft voice and she is cute as a button telling jokes and singng songs while playing her ukulele. She is a seasoned pro, a very good actor and performer.
The other stand out act of the show was The Puterbaugh Sisters. They had more jokes in their act than most stand-up comedians. They performed twice in the show, first as women from the 1800's completely in costume and did a fabulous routine writing back and forth to eachother in chat/computer speak all in the context of 1800 sensibilities. For their second act they appeared as dames from the forties and wowed the sparce crowd with song that included the such lyrics as "If you ain't white, you're not right!" They also did a hilarious lesbian routine that killed. The night I saw them, there was a crowd of 25 and it is a shame, because these girls should be playing larger venues or just head right to the TV.
The remainder of the show consited of strippers, Scarlett D’Evil who charmed the crowd with her 50's pin-up good looks and charm. Ms. Bea Haven, Tila von Twirl, Ms. Bea Haven, and Lola Martinet, and songs by Vallery Dolls and Miss Ann McGregor. Lola did a very nice silhouette routine inside a hanging sheet. And all of the girls were very arousing and entertaining. It's a strip show, come on! You should go see Gilie Q, they deserve a large audience for their collective talents.
The Girlie-Q Variety Hour runs Friday's and Saturdays at Midnight til August 2 for $20, a great bargain!
