Since emerging in August 2007, ReVoLtReVoLt’s shockwave sound continues to tighten immensely. Their Thursday night show at Neurolux opening for Woven Bones was electrifying as usual.
Chris Bock, Jasin Serna and Ben Brunn’s progressive rock tones paint a post-apocalyptic war zone landscape. The semi-short songs contain ferocious subject matter, beginning understated like bubbles popping out of hot lava, then gaining momentum, revving up with raw energy until mounting to a tribal thunder collision.
Lyrics like, “America’s on fire and we’re all on fire...” and “Glowing red light like a fire that burns ‘til the end of time. It’s a time to feel alive,” express moods existentially accepting an ugly world while facing an enemy square in the eye, bold and ready.
Serna on drums digs in aggressively with a high-spirited pitter-patter frenzy. Brunn’s bass clicks off at a rigorous pace too, both like punching typewriters and adding machines rat-a-tatting together in a state office with fifty secretaries burning their fingers on keyboards. Then Bock’s soft whispering vocals progress to megaphone shouts. On guitar, he generally lets the groove stay beat-heavy. He accentuates Ben and Jasin’s rhythm with chords buzzing fuzzy tremors, waiting for just the right time to climb his fret-board in mean wails.
The band shares unbeatable priceless moments like in “Farewell Address” when Serna, Bock and Brunn line up in precise perfection like a firing squad unloading three rounds in choreographed synchronicity.
This unity makes for solid maturity in a set but as a working band, too. ReVoLtReVoLt has grown at a swift rate, developing a steady fan base between frequent tours. Their potential backs up its fist for a more powerful swing as they prepare for a national tour with Built To Spill this fall.
Their first album is a fitting showcase for the punk-infused trio. Released November 17 through label Spark and Shine, Chordata blends ReVoLtReVoLt’s riveting sound with flavor varied just a smidgen from their shows, so be sure to give both album and live performances a listen.
