Men’s basketball: Wednesday recap (Jan. 11)

Edinboro 76, Gannon 72: A crowd of 2,243 at Erie’s Hammermill Center were treated to 30 minutes of solid basketball by the home-standing Golden Knights. With 10:55 left to play, Gannon (8-5, 6-3 PSAC West) held a 62-52 lead over Edinboro (8-5, 6-3). Over the next 9:20, however, the Fighting Scots went on a 22-4 run to turn a 10 point Gannon lead into an eight point deficit. Issac Prince’s jumper with 5:40 left tied the game 64-64. Bryan Theriot (11 points) scored what would be the game winning layup with 4:58 left. Same Moore scored seven of his 11 points during the decisive run for the Fighting Scots. Jay Fletcher led Edinboro with 19 points. Gannon’s Darrell Blanton, who led all scorers with 22 points, shot 10-for-17 (58.8 percent) from the field; the rest of the Golden Knights shot 17-for-53 (32.1 percent).

Clarion 71, Mercyhurst 66: The Lakers hung close at Tippin Gymnasium, but they couldn’t overcome Clarion’s 11-for-20 (55 percent) shooting from the field in the second half. Mercyhurst (8-5, 6-3 PSAC West) held a 24-17 lead with 6:53 left in the first half before Clarion (11-4, 7-2) outscored the Lakers 18-5 the rest of the half to take a 35-29 halftime lead. The Lakers rallied to tie the game at 54-54 with 9:33 left to play before Bud Teer’s layup gave Clarion the lead for good. Mercyhurst got no closer than five points the rest of the game. Calvin Edwards led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, going 10-for-13 from the foul line. Callon Dailey came off the bench to score 18 points for Mercyhurst.

Bloomsburg 67, Shippensburg 66: The Red Raiders blew an 11 point lead with 14:29 left to play as Bloomsburg (11-3, 7-2 PSAC East) outscored Shippensburg (6-9, 3-6) 9-3 in the final three minutes of regulation. Trevon Johnson (12 points) sank four foul shots in the final minute to clinch Bloomsburg’s sixth win of four points or fewer this season. Dontahe Jordan and Nnamdi Njoku each scored 14 points to lead the Huskies. Craig Van Scyoc had 21 in a losing effort for the Red Raiders.

Kutztown 87, West Chester 68: It was bombs away at Keystone Hall as all five Golden Bear starters finished in double figures in a dominating top-to-bottom thrashing of a sinking West Chester (6-7, 3-6 PSAC East) team which has lost four of their last five games. Tyler Brooks led Kutztown (8-5, 5-4) with 22 points on 10-for-11 shooting from the field, while Eric Brennan recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Corey Blake led West Chester with 16 points, while Lance McDowell added 15 points and nine rebounds. The Golden Bears, winners of four in a row, have shot 55.1 percent (140-for-254) during the win streak, including 36-for-63 (57.1 percent) against the Golden Rams, as they enter Saturday’s showdown at East Stroudsburg.

East Stroudsburg 76, Mansfield 56: And, speaking of the Warriors, Terrence King’s 20 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field paced East Stroudsburg (9-6, 5-4 PSAC East) over a rebuilding Mansfield (5-8, 2-7) at Koehler Field House and gave Warriors head coach Jeff Wilson his 150th career win at East Stroudsburg. Duane Johnson added 15 points, while Lamont Tillery added 11 for the Warriors. Joe Bell had 12 points and Josh Dupuy 10 for the Mountaineers, who never led in the entire game.

Indiana (Pa.) 68, California (Pa.) 58: It took nearly two minutes before either team scored a point in this heated rivalry at the Kovalchick arena. After seven ties and six lead changes through the first half, the Vulcans and Crimson Hawks were tied 30-30 at halftime. IUP (11-2, 8-1 PSAC West) went on a 16-2 run in the first six minutes of the second half to take control of the game. Cal (8-7, 5-4) cut the Crimson Hawks lead to 64-58 with 1:51 left to play, however, Julian Sanders (19 points) sank a pair of foul shots to ice the game. IUP’s Ashton Smith led all scorers with 24 points. Keith Lowe had 16 points while Steve Swiech added 11 for the Vulcans.

Slippery Rock 84, Lock Haven 61: The Rock stormed out to an 11-1 lead in the opening six minutes of the game and never looked back as Lock Haven (0-12, 0-9 PSAC West) lost their 31st straight game  dating back to last season. Tabari Perry led Slippery Rock (9-4, 6-3) with 22 points and Devin Taylor recorded a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds). Andre Rivers led the Haven with 16 points.

The Millersville at Cheyney game was postponed due to a water main break and flooding at Cope Hall, Cheyney’s home gym. The game has been rescheduled to Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
