Concussions are a scary thing, especially in this day and age of football. Heading in to Penn State's annual football media day the topic of concussions was a pertinent one as sophomore cornerback Stephon Morris was diagnosed with a concussion earlier this week.
Joe Paterno confirmed in his press conference that Morris was injured but said he was in decent shape now. Paterno also noted that his team has seen a few concussions hit the team in practices so far and the doctors and coaches are taking the injury seriously. Paterno said that Morris will be fine and Morris later confirmed that he will be ready to go when the season starts.
When asked to reflect on when he was injured Morris shared as many details as he could about the play and the order of events following it. Morris collided with his head down with running back Curtis Dukes after being hit by a lineman (Dukes was not the intended target for Morris).
The news of the injury to Morris was alarming at first for Penn State as he is expected to be a starter at cornerback this season. Morris is expected to start on the opposite side of D'Anton Lyn and he played in each game last season.
Would Morris have done anything differently on the play he suffered his concussion if he had to do it again? "I wouldn't have changed nothing," Morris said, asserting that he did his job in the given situation on the field. Morris confirmed that his head was down and that he should have kept his head up on the play. "That's a lesson," Morris said. "I know since I was six years old that you're supposed to keep your head up."
Morris is day-to-day as practices resume for Penn State after an off-day on Friday's final exams for summer sessions. He fully expects to be ready for the start of the season.
