If you haven't heard of Gameforge, check them out. They're a company based off the premise that you can actually make money by handing out free stuff.
Much like how an iPhone game can encourage game sales by creating a Free edition, they specialize in browser-based games which offer additional content for those who want to purchase it.
With that primer, news has released that CBS Consumer Products has licensed the Star Trek property to them for said games. Also in the works is a social networking game, but they won't be simply a spread-release.
The browser-based game will focus more on combat and RPG elements, while the social networking game will capitalize on interaction among friends and focus on exploration. One is to be set in the original series, while the other in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine era.
As the game is currently in pre-production, there is little that is being released for the moment. So for now, keep your eyes peeled for talk of an online Star Trek game that isn't talking about the currently released MMO Star Trek: Online.
