Paul McCartney's "(I Want To) Come Home" from the Robert DeNiro film "Everybody's Fine" was shut out in the Best Song choices for the Oscar nominations announced this morning.
That wasn't totally surprising considering it didn't make the cut for either the Golden Globes or the VH1 Critics' Choice Awards. T-Bone Burnett's "The Weary Kind (Theme from "Crazy Heart") from "Crazy Heart", which won both, did, however, and not surprisingly.
Also nominated were two songs from the Randy Newman-scored "The Princess and the Frog": "Almost There," sung by Anika Noni Rose, and "Down in New Orleans," sung by one-time Ringo Starr All-Starr Band member Dr. John.
The five nominees are rounded out by "Loin de Paname" from "Paris 36" and "Take it All" from "Nine."
This is unfortunate. "(I Want To) Come Home" is a great song that should have done better.

I think you should point out that Bono didn't get nominated either. Nor did Karen O. Nor did Jack White. Nor did any of the great songs that were in the Twilight movie (I wasn't a fan of the movie but it had a lot of good music.)
But yeah, it's too bad Paul didn't get a nom. But the fact is, the movie got terrible reviews and flopped at the box office. His song was the best thing about it, besides Robert DeNiro's performance.
Randy Newman - Twice? I like him, but that just shows that the academy loves him a little too much. T Bone will win. Paul never had a chance of winning, but the nomination would have been nice. Since all the nominated songs are usually preformed live I wonder if U2 and Paul said they couldn't be there and that was the cause of no nomination?
I agree with Dee. There were a lot of really good songs left out. The T Bone song is not that great and it is sad that it is sweeping the awards this year (with all due respect to T Bone). T Bone wrote the song for the better movie.
I don't think Paul will lose any sleep over it.
I love Randy Newman, too, but really...TWO songs? This is MUCH better than the rather lame "Vanilla Sky" from 10 years ago, or whenever that was. Then again, Aimee Mann should have won THAT year for "Save Me," but it went to some horrible song sung by-- am I right here?-- Robin Williams?
I'm not complaining about Randy Newman's two nominations. I think he's a superb songwriter. I just think Paul's song was good. But, as you said, Melody, he probably won't lose much sleep over it.
It would have fit great on Chaos and Creation in the Backyard which is I think my favorite solo Paul album. I don't think there is one bad song on it and it got three nominations in the 2006 Grammy awards but no statue unfortunately. Maybe the only bad thing if this is a bad thing about Chaos is that it goes fast from first song to last even with some longer songs like "How Kind of You" and "Riding to Vanity Fair." But I'm off topic as this has nothing to do with that album. "I Want to Come Home" grew on me after the first few listens and I think it should have gotten a nomination for an Oscar.
Like anyone who reads the Beatles Examiner, I'm a huge fan, and Paul is my favorite. . . but the track is very weak. I can't speak for his Oscar competition, but it doesn't belong in any "best song" category.
Boo hoo! It's a pretty unremarkable song. Macca has recieved (and will receive) far greater accolades than this, I don't think he'd be losing any sleep over it!
