She has an amazing voice and a huge heart for God as witnessed in her worship music. Courtney Spears is a former local volleyball star and a talented singer/songwriter who has performed her songs in the Portland-Vancouver area. Now she is taking her skills back to school, as she looks to build up the volleyball program at Horizon Christian High School in Tualatin, Oregon.
Spears spent her days in high school at Lake Oswego under the watchful eyes of highly esteemed volleyball mentor, Rick Lorenz. After graduating from high school, it was onto The Master’s College in Santa Clarita, California. She got her first job as a Head Volleyball coach 12 years ago at Westside Christian in Lake Oswego. Spears coached the Eagles team for 5 years, taking them to the State Playoffs. Then she decided to take some time off to start and raise a family of three.
Now with her own children at the age that she doesn’t need to be at home all the time, she jumped at the chance when Horizon Christian Set the ball up for her return to coaching. “(I) Saw this as an opportunity to dive into a program that needs to be built up”, stated Spears.
During her playing days, Spears was very competitive on the floor and “a girl” off the court and she desires her players to adapt that mentality. “To be good citizens on and off the court”, stated Spears. She also desires for her players to live their faith for God in competition.
The Horizon Christian Hawks volleyball program is relatively new this being the second season. The numbers are still low only seven players for the optional summer practices. But Spears hopes for more participation when fall practices start, on August 23rd.
The summer workouts for the Hawks have been an introduction to the program. How things are going to work, getting to know each other’s skill sets, and understanding the coaching. “We were just getting our feet wet (for) the intensity (in) practices that are going to be starting next week”, said Spears.
The goals for this year’s team is to improve upon the things they did well last year and build on that transforming to more wins for the team, ensuring a positive atmosphere for the future. “We have the potential to compete very well at the varsity level, but we’ll be playing a JV schedule this year”, Spears says. “So we expect to get some more wins at that level”.
The Hawks will begin their second season on Thursday, September 9th with a home match against Gervais.

It is a joy to know that a local talent with a gift for leadership--whether it is leading music worship at church, or leading a group of young people in high school sports--and a love for people will be a positive influence upon these girls. I know Courtney will be a blessing for the Horizon Christian Volleyball team! :) I will be praying for her!
It's not so much about the win, but the journey! That's what God commands of us: simply to do our best. And He does the rest.
