A tranquil view of Diamond Hill Park

Diamond Hill Park in Cumberland, Rhode Island recently hosted the nineteenth annual All Chevy Show put on by the Rhode Island Chevy Owners’ Association.

The connoisseur of classic cars should click here for a slideshow of participating vehicles.

Over one hundred and sixty cars came in for the event with admission, a 50/50 raffle and vendor proceeds all going to the “A Wish Come True, Inc.” and the Ronald McDonald House.

The RI Chevy Owners’ Association is a grass roots affair in itself. Three Chevy aficionados were tired of driving all the way to the Cape to meet other Chevy owners. Local clubs like this spring up all the time. One thing about Americans, the classic car is ingrained into their consciousness. Every town has its own impromptu car clubs. Drive through town one evening and you’ll see them, a gathering of cars in some small lot.

The RI Chevy Owners’ Association is the same idea, only on a much larger scale. The RI Association is open to any classic or custom for free Friday night car cruises which run from late April until early September. New members are always welcome. Fellow car lover Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer (of 100.1 FM) dj’s the Friday Night events which originate from the Stop & Shop Plaza in Cumberland on Route 122 South.

Situated a mere 17 miles from Providence, Diamond Hill Park on Route 114 in Cumberland, is a 427 acre site open from dusk til dawn. In the past Diamond Hill was used by skiers. Some of the old slopes are still there, they make excellent paths now. The park is a touch on the hilly side, making it a real draw for hikers, and the reservoir pulls in the fishing crowd. The view from the summit is breathtaking and, for the amateur rock hound, there are copious occurrences of agate and quartz. There was even a report of some amethyst, itself virtually identical to quartz except for having a purple tint to it, this believed to be caused by the presence of iron and aluminum.
