Ditch the car and ride a pony.
One of the best parks for a picnic and a lazy afternoon, the Enchanted Forest gives this neighborhood what too many others in Miami lack: a forest of green space – all within walking distance of Target and the drive-through Starbucks! The most unique feature, though, is the horse stable. This feature alone puts the 22-acre retreat in the top tier of neighborhood parks.
Rocking N. Ranch, Inc., run by Shirley Chance (305-891-9512) offers pony rides for kids up to age 10 on weekends only. On other days, you can catch the ponies and horses lounging around the stable, along with the muskovy ducks and the orange cat-in-residence.
The best wildlife viewing is from the bridge over the moat, where soft-shell turtles congregate. Nearby, the tall white duck (duck, goose?) likes to stand guard by the sign “Do Not Feed the Wildlife.” Raccoons, possums, and non-native but impressively large iguanas can also be seen. Note: dogs are not allowed around the creek.
Six heavy-duty BBQ pits are scattered around the park, and residents can rent one of two pavilions for $65 ($130 for non-residents). The western pavilion is near the playground and has ample grass for kiddie soccer.
Towering live oak trees spread the shade, and they are dotted with delicate ferns and air plants. Also check out the butterfly garden, the veterans tree memorial, and the various walking paths winding through the dense canopy. When you leave, visit the street immediately north of the park – a shady lane that hosts the area’s best Christmas lights display. In October, the park hosts an annual haunted trail.
The park closes one hour before sunset and opens one hour after sunrise. A ranger living on site provides extra security and oversight.
Visit the Enchanted Forest, and you will have one enchanted picnic.
