Tween Trends: Hair Coloring---Yes or No?

Dallas Parenting Tweens Examiner
When was the first time you went to a hair salon to have your hair colored? When you were twenty? Thirty….or nine? Bold chunks of highlighted color is the trend that is becoming more prominent among tween girls between the ages of 9 and 12.
A recent
New York Times article sheds light on how hair coloring for young girls is all the rage. No one tracks how many girls 12 and younger go to professionals to receive lowlights that darken, pale tints of color, straighteners, curl-inducing permanents or full-color dye with highlights, but, “the trend is definitely there,” said Gordon Miller, a spokesman for the
National Cosmetology Association.
“It’s a lucrative niche market for the industry that is beginning to be addressed at trade shows and other association events.”
Is it wise to spend hundreds of dollars on hair treatments for your tween? Is it acceptable to dye parts of your daughter or son’s hair in bright pink, green or blue streaks? Please
let me know what you think.

Oh boy! Am I an old fuddy-duudy if I say "no", I don't want my tween coloring her hair? I already feel like I made a huge concession when I let her go out in public with painted fingernails at the age of 6! I wouldn't want to draw a direct connection b/w highlights and eating disorders, 'cause I have no proof, but this just seems like another unnecessary pressure on young girls. I feel a little better now about the fact that I still have to remind my daughter to comb her hair!
