Communicating Musically With Your Tween

With Paul McCartney’s concert in Dallas this week, August 19th, 2009 and the 40th anniversary of Woodstock being celebrated nationwide, what better time to talk music with your tween. Talk to your tween about what kind of music they like and then compare it to your musical tastes. You might be surprised.

Recent research has shown that the generation gap between adults and teens is minimizing. The Desert Sun ran an article on how music bridges the generation gap using a Pew Research Study. In essence, the Pew Study results showed that younger music listeners are interested in music from the 60’s. The Desert Sun article states:

"The survey authors called younger respondents' love for music from the 1960s one of their most compelling findings.
“Try imagining young adults back in the 1960s putting the big jazz bands of the Roaring '20s at the top of their list of favorites. Not very likely,” they wrote. “But that's the generational equivalent of what's happening now.”

Here is a listing from the Pew Study of the Top Ten Bands that span generations:
1. The Beatles
2. The Eagles
3. Johnny Cash
4. Michael Jackson
5. Elvis Presley
6. The Rolling Stones
7. Aretha Franklin
8. Frank Sinatra
9. Carrie Underwood
10. Garth Brooks

Sharing your musical tastes with your tween will open another line of communication for you….and sharing your Itunes just became easier.

I believe all generation were represented when Si Paul played Fenway! Surprised not to see The Grateful Dead and They Might Be Giants on that list--two bands who fan base seems to continually stay young while holding on to previous listeners.
