Fun Friday: Where to go in Contra Costa to have a fun 4th

So it’s the day before the big day, and you’ve got all your plan together. Your oldest will be borrowing the car so he can go out with friends, but before he goes he’ll take you and the little ones to Grandma’s house for the Bar-B-Que; however you soon realize your teenage son has no idea what he’s going to be doing.

Sorry boy – not good enough. For safety sake, an itinerary must be made and kept. Traffic getting to and especially leaving the fireworks can be extremely trying at best; with fire-crackers going off all around it can be a little nerve wracking. So, he doesn’t know what’s going on? Here’s a few ideas:

Antioch: The alcohol free, Hometown Parade starts around 7:00 and ends around 10:00. There will be a variety of live bands playing, with many food vendors to appease the hungriest of teenagers. It takes place at the waterfront – historic downtown Antioch – and the Cities firework display starts around 9pm over the water.

Pittsburg: The City of Pittsburg sponsors the same sort of event. Parade and vendors earlier during the day and the fireworks display at the Pittsburg Marina is scheduled for dusk - For more info, call (925)432-7301

Martinez: Martinez will also have a fireworks display over the river. Martinez has a beautiful expansive park and Marina, but it’s very popular on the forth. If you want a great spot you have to get there early. People have been know to go in the morning, setting up for lunch and dinner picnics

Concord: Concord’s hot spot for the 4th has been the Singing Flag for the last 21 years. This is an excellent 4th of July celebration put together by Calvary Temple, but don’t be scared away by any fears of religion or preaching because you won’t find any here – just a great group of very talented singers leading the City of Concord in one of the biggest sing-a-longs you’ll ever attend. Concessions and FunZone USA open at 4pm and the show (complete with fireworks display) starts at 7:30.
But as I said, this is a hot spot – early arrival is mandatory or you’ll loose out. Please visit their website for more info.

Pleasant Hill: The City of Pleasant Hills has a fun filled day at their Pleasant Hill Municipal Swimming Pool and nearby Skyline Field. The festivities start with a “build your own boat” race at 4pm and family fun (including old fashioned sack and three legged races at 6) up to the fireworks display at Skyline Field shortly after sunset.

I, along with all of Greenman Coaching and Examiner.com wishes you a very happy and safe Fourth of July!
