Beautiful and brilliant: I knew it was possible!

Danica McKellar - a mathmatical model

While thumbing through the July issue of Psychology Today, I ran across a delightful article about Danica McKellar. Some of you may remember her, but she’s come a long way from the awkward little girl Winnie, she played in the TV show; The Wonder Years.

The interview by Matthew Hutson was delightful to read and was called “Mathematical Model”. Apparently, McKellar has found another love – Math. Since graduating from UCLA with a degree in math, McKellar has written two books; Kiss my Math and Math Doesn’t Suck.

One of McKellar’s vision is to show teen and pre-teen girls that you don’t have to be a nerdy little girl to do well, or even like math (trust me McKellar looks anything but a nerd). Also Mckellar remembers what it was like growing up in middle-school just when math was getting harder as were many other things as well. She says;

Most problems are geared toward boys, whether it’s about train schedules or baseball statistics. I wanted to show math in the context of things that girls are already thinking about: you’re going shopping for shoes. If you take 30% off the marked sale price…” (Psychology Today, July/August 2009, 34).

I know that’s something my girls think about!

This is GREAT. How long have our girls been bombarded with Seventeen and Cosmo Girl, teaching our young ladies how to be glamorous? There’s nothing wrong with being glamorous, but now we have a great role model in Danica McKellar on how to be glamorous and smart … and the two are not mutually exclusive of each other! Keep up the good work Ms. McKellar, I can’t wait to pick up your books for my daughters!
