Cervical cancer is caused by HPV, a common sexually transmitted infection. Unlike other cancers, cervical cancer can be prevented with proper screening and a vaccination. There are two types of screening, a pap test which women should begin getting at age 21 and a HPV test, recommended for women 30 and older.
The HPV vaccination helps prevent the most common types of HPV that cause 70% of all cervical cancers. This is where your teens come in. This vaccination is most effective when given to girls before they become sexually active and is recommended for girls between ages 9 and 26.
