With the recent shooting of 16 year old Anthony Jones, Duval County Schools are asking all students to turn over any potential threatening text messages. It is speculated that Anthony Jones was one of several students on a 'hit list' that circulated through students cell phones.
Duval County School District is asking students who get any of the text messages to report them. Students can remain anonymous. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it's taking all of the messages very seriously and it's working closely with the schools.
Anthony Jones, a student at Rains High School, is recovering in the hospital from the gun shot wound. His aunt, Cheryl Simmons has said that she notified both the school and the Jacksonville Sheriff's office when the text was received as well as disturbing phone messages approximately two weeks prior the shooting.
According to News4Jax, the Duval County School District confirmed it's looking into a Forrest High School message, as well as reports coming in from other middle and high schools including Andrew Jackson High School.
In Florida over the past several months we have been exposed to the ugly forms of school violence. In October 2009, the horrific news of Michael Brewer being doused in alcohol and set on fire by other teens shocked not only our state, but our nation. Then this past March we heard about the brutal beating of eighth grader, Josie Ratley by another teen that never meet her.
