Whether we are in Broward, Dade or Palm Beach County, when teenagers are arriving at school campuses with the intention of building and setting off a bomb, all parents, educators and schools need to take notice.
In Brevard County, 16-year-old Cameron Lee Kage was arrested at his school Tuesday and charged with possession of bomb-making materials at a school and attempting to make a destructive device. According to the Miami Herald, this teenager is currently in Brevard Juvenile Detention Center. The teen later admitted to police that he was researching ways to make bombs.
Authorities say the Eau Gallie High School student was carrying a book bag that had bomb-making ingredients, a knife, notebooks with details on how to make different types of bombs, a trench coat and combat boots. Detectives are looking at a notebook found in the teen's locker for clues to a possible motive.
Florida Today reports the teen is believed to have acted alone but officials are looking into the possibility other students may have known about Kage's efforts, Principal Tom Sawyer said.
School violence has been a topic of concern for parents and schools. Last October we witnessed Michael Brewer being doused in alcohol and set on fire by other teens over a dispute about a video game. This past March we heard about the brutal beating of Josie Ratley by another teen, Wayne Treacy, whom she had never meet.
Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) is a student driven organization. Students learn about alternatives to violence and practice what they learn through school and community service projects. As they participate in SAVE activities, students learn crime prevention and conflict management skills and the virtues of good citizenship, civility, and nonviolence.
Students Offering Support is designed to bring a positive impact into our community through charitable causes and much more.
Be proactive today. Teachers, schools parents and students need to ban together to stop school violence.
