R.I.P. Indie 101.5
Indie 101.5 FM is gone as we knew it. We knew something was coming. Friday, the independent alternative Denver radio station abruptly turned into 101.5 The Pole and is programming "stripper" music. Just for now, that is. You may see other articles on this and the raging comments from loyal Indie listeners. Don't worry. It's just a stunt. The switch is called, appropriately, stunting in the radio broadcasting world.
While The Pole is a temporary joke, it is true that the station will no longer run an alternative/indie format. Rumors are circulating that 101.5 FM will flip the format to talk radio.
It is sad for fans of alternative music that cannot be heard on other Colorado stations (with the exception of CU Boulder's KVCU 1190 AM, that is). There is hope, however. Please read Indie 101.5 Ralphie's manifesto here. He wrote the letter for fans. Come on over to Indie303.com. It's exciting that this group of DJs will still be getting independent music out to those who need it.

Thank you for the article. I think that people just need to be more proactive and actually realize that these things happen for a reason and usually it is all about money and the powers that be. I know what this station meant to me personally so I tried to help sell advertizing and did my part to help sell the station by word of mouth. As I get older I understand that nothing is free and things such as awesome radio.....must be earned. Mainstream radio is and probably always will be the way everyone will go...thats where the money is...and to these greedy corporations, that's all there is in life. People who liked Indie, would say that music is life, and life is music, it is a way to express yourself and or relax, or just be free, and these big companies come along and snatch these freedoms away, all for the almighty dollar. Sad and sick. Thanks for the article.
Well, that explains the sounds coming from my radio during yesterday's drive. Too bad, it was a good format and good station. Looks like I'll be spenind more time listening to 93.3.
Typical. Denver finally has a good station and the f'ing suits take it away. Mainstream radio SUCKS AZZ....I'm going to Sirius.
I thought they were "independant" and did not need ratings to stay on air, instead just local support!?! I just found out and I don't get it
I told you guys! Although I am not from this country, I am still love the flavor for good music like the Bittles, Elveys Presley, Withney Houston, and so and so on... But when I see corparations Like Denver Radio Company filing for banktruptcy just because a few bunch of people want to do radio in their own ugly musical taste, that really mekes me wonder if you guys are blind, deff or what?
Don't you undertand that Denver Radio Company just lost 27 millions dollars trying to experiment with this kind of music that is painfully irritaring even for our own helth!
And let me confess that I did my best to convince this guys of MaxMedia to flipp the radio to an Oldie or Hispanic format, but they didn't listen. So, I hope they finally meke the right move and finally start to make that radio station a little bit profitable.
Commercial Radio is not an art, commercial radio is a business! In Indie 101.5 was anything but a business, it was an ugly and stinky music joke!
Oh, I forgot to say this: You are correct, you don't need ratings to stay on the air, but ratings are a very close reflection of your audience out there listening on a daily basis. So, with out a loyal audience, how in the world are you going to get local support?
In this business we are not talking about hundres or thousands, in this business we are talking about hundreds of thousands and even millions! So, If you don't have a respected amount of audience that can give you those numbers by the sale of advertising, you don't have absolutely nothing to do in the commercial radio business!
Again, the bottom line is to create something that the majority of the people would be willind to digest, and... In this case, music that will be more tolerable by the majority of the audience.
So, Besides an ugly and painfull music, Indie had probably the worst signal in Denver. So, if your music is ugly and if your signal is weak, tell me how in the world you guys were hoping to get support?
Joel, I have to say: you are cracking me up! If I had to listen to what the masses want, including the Beatles, Elvis and Whitney Houston, I think MY health would deteriorate! To each his own, right? Thanks for reading my articles.
Lil Yummy: Don't pin all your hopes on Sirius. I've been noticing how "corporate" they've become! Same ol' playlists. DJs...talking! What happened to "all music?"
Thomas: Every business needs more than local support. I believe the independent referred more to their playlists.
Hey Joel. I remember the day you came in and talked to Blake (the stations GM at the time). He described you as a wacko and the only reason he suffered you is because you were playing the race card. Classy. Yes, oldies and spanish radio are the future. Look at how many stations are suceeding doing that with the People Meter. All is good in your world, Indie failed. Now what's your pathetic cause. Aww, wait. It'll be discrimination. Deep
Here no body is or was ever talking about descrimination or race. This matter was, and it is about $$$ Money, Money, and Money $$$. Also, I am not surprised that Blake under estimated my potential because he's lock of knowledge (Stupidity) played a crucial factor in his stupid decision about the radio format that he choose for 101.5. I don't know who was more stupid between you or him. You for doing radio with out havening a clue about how commercial radio works, or Him because despite all his radio career experience, he was still persuaded to play a format that has been known for a world wide fame of unsuccesfull commercial conent.
Yo here the bottom line is that You, Blake, and Steve Keeney; you all had your chanse and you waste it. You left the company with a 27 million dollar debt! In this capital world what matter is money, and if your ideas don't produce enough of it, you are fired! Fired! Fired!
Sinse this signal were bought from Bob Sellmer, This radio signals were...
prediceted to fail because they were missing the crucial which consist in giving the masses what the masses wants. But, now that you have your proyect in the internet, now you are in the perfect media were only the selected amount of your followers are going to be there to fry their brains with music made to distort the perfect harmony of the human body and mind.
But, honestly, I don't give a dam about what happens with your radio in the internet. Usually I would like to see how that New Talk Show format performs. Probably it would do well because rural Colorado (Were 101.5 signal is very strong) it is full of right wing racist that love to hear presentators to talk and acourage them to follow their racist agenda. Rural Colorado is full of Republicans that love this king of garbage on their radios. SO, I think the new format is going to work very well. And now I understand that a company that allows this kind of format is against all my filosophies and principles. SO, ADIOS Loosers
Its been almost a year and I still miss you Indie 101.5!
Ive been listening to sports talk and it became old months ago.
I give ktcl 93.3 a chance every now and then, but it only frustrates me as I have heard a new (to me) song about once since losing MY Favorite Station. You can find me on indie303.com when I am in the office, and bashing my head against the stearing wheel on the road.
101.5 was a great information station, talk radio that we could hear a different view point and one that you never hear the truth in the news like you did on this station. Too bad because some people were learning something besides mind numbing music all the time. Hard time are coming for most of us and this station ( The truth 101.5 ) and all its commentary was a good thing for people to hear. This Gov is censoring every one but they them self’s don’t and won’t care about you when the shit hits the fan.
Many people want this talk radio back. So back to the brain dead music.
