Prevent Bug Bites with Listerine

I was outside talking with a neighbor a few months ago when he pulled a little squirt bottle from his pocket. He sprayed a mosquito on his sleeve, and then sprayed into his own mouth.

“What are you doing?” I asked. “Did you just eat bug spray?”

“No,” he answered. “It’s Listerine.”

This piqued my interest. The only bug repellent on the market that seems to work contains DEET, and I am not a big fan of dousing my toddler with it (or my own pregnant self). The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend using DEET on children under age two, and to be very careful with it on older children.

My neighbor gave me his four-ounce squirt bottle. (“I have more at home,” he said.) I tried it out. He’s right—mosquitoes hate it. My son and I have been bite-free since I started carrying it around, and as an added bonus, I never have bad breath!
