The first time I met a cloth diapering mom, I hardly noticed. "Where did you find blue diapers for Henry?" I asked, thinking it was just a color thing.
She laughed. She probably gets that a lot. "They're cloth diapers," she said. "BumGeniuses. They come in all sorts of colors."
Aside from color-coordinating Henry's diapers to his outfits (which was pretty chic), I thought she was nuts. Cloth diapering!?!? What a lot of work!
Then I noticed how much money my own family spends on disposable diapers, and how much trash we create. I decided to try a cloth diaper with my newborn.
Last week, I blew $17.95 on a one-size-fits-all bumGenius diaper at Soft Cloth Bunz.. I love it. I just ordered six more (in lots of colors).
The bumGenius one-sizer has a snap in front that folds it small enough for a seven-pound infant. As the baby grows, you can unsnap the folds and use the diaper until the baby is 35 pounds. I'm not sure about the 35-pound part, but Sam weighs 10 pounds, and it fits him just fine. It leaked the first time. Then I figured out what I was doing.
BumGeniuses are an "all-in-one" cloth diaper. That means the diaper includes a removable inner liner (similar to a maxi pad made of polyester), as well as a waterproof outer shell.

I wish more people would sing the praises of cloth diapers. I love using them! They are just as easy as disposables, they rarely leak, and they provide a huge cost savings.
