Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum

Hidden in a quiet neighborhood only a mile from Baltimore's Inner Harbor lies one of Metro DC's greatest train treasures: the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum (also known as the B&O Museum). There are enough steam engines, rolling stock, and train paraphernalia to satisfy the hungriest train enthusiast. But that's not the best part: this museum is kid-friendly.

Museum staff actually want children to meddle. Kids can climb right into enormous steam locomotives and fiddle with the controls.  There are two wooden train sets to play with. The museum building is an actual roundhouse, and children can walk right onto the wooden turntable.  There is a model train that runs inside an actual train car. This is one of the few museums in Washington where your kids may have as much fun as you do.

Address: 901 W. Pratt St., Baltimore, MD  21223. Without traffic, it's about an hour drive from Washington, DC.

Cost: Children ages 2-12: $8; adults $12

Hours: Monday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm, and Sunday from 11:00am to 4:00pm
