Tampa mom pours her heart into her candle company

I've always been inspired by people who stumble upon an idea due to circumstances in their lives and form a business around it.  Belinda Leto, owner of Tampa's Luminous Glow Candle Company, is one of these individuals.

Here's her story:

"I have a 13-year-old son who was always suffering from sinus infections.  I am a nurse by trade and had tried many antibiotics and herbal remedies.  A friend gave me a eucalyptus soy candle to try in his room and I loved the way it burned and how it helped him breathe better.  I thought I would get some information on soy wax candles and decided to buy a small kit to try and make a few for him."

What did she learn?

"I have always been a candle fanatic but was irritated by the way there was always left over wax all over the sides of the jar and especially all of the black soot.  I was happy to learn that soy candles have natural clean burning properties.  I also found is that it is really difficult to make a candle.  You have to have the right combination of wicks, wax and fragrance otherwise it can actually be quite dangerous!  I began to wonder if I could create a business for myself, do something on the side to earn a little extra while on my quest to find that 'right combination'."

It has been 2 1/2 years since  Luminous Glow Candle Company  was born.  Since then, Belinda has found that right combination.  Currently, her hand poured soy candles are housed in 19 retail locations in the Tampa Bay area including Carrollwood Florist and Abby's Heath and Nutrition.  Much of her business also comes from schools, churches, groups and leagues who sell her candles as fund raisers.  In the spring and fall, she travels all over the state of Florida doing various arts and crafts shows and in February of 2010 Luminous Glow Candle Company will be at the Florida State Fair.

Belinda makes the candles in her West Tampa home and would not have it any other way.   She uses a 100 lb. wax vat melter for larger orders and fundraisers and 10 lb "presto" pots for smaller orders and carries over 80 scents from which to choose.

How does Belinda handle the challenges of being a mom and an entrepreneur?

"I am a mom to 2 boys ages 13 and 5 as well as a step-mom to 2 more boys ages 12 and 13.  My dog Miranda is the only girl to keep me company.  It is extremely difficult to juggle my time and be involved in my children's schools and sports activities, but I always manage.  My children love to help with the candles.  My sons know how to wick and label, they tell me which scents they like and which they don't."

What is her advice to other mompreneurs?

"My advice for moms who want to start a business is to read, research and learn.  Go for it and never look back. There were many nights at 2 or 3 a.m. when I was tired and in tears trying to keep up with the production of these candles but I would never trade it for anything.  I have loved every moment of this business and will strive to ensure it keeps on growing.  We sure have grown and I am grateful to God for this blessing."
