We have had some really cold weather lately: especially with the wind chill factor. I was out picking up some groceries on Friday and then had to pick up a cake on the weekend. Both times, there were young girls selling Girl Scout cookies. Neither child had on hats nor gloves and they were visibly cold: very cold. Their little noses were red they were attempting to stay warm. They had both pulled their sleeves down as far as the y could and their collars up as high as possible. One little Girl Scout was jumping up and down and rubbing her hands together and the other one was huddling under her Dad’s jacket.
I had already bought some cookies from my neighbor but felt so bad for these frozen little girls, I bought another box from both of them. My daughter was with me over the weekend trip and asked the little girl why she didn’t go home. She replied that her shift was for 2 more hours.
When your child is standing there in freezing weather, ill dressed and obviously way too cold, is it right to keep her out until “her shift is over?” On one hand, you are teaching her responsibility but on the other hand, isn’t it a parent’s job to protect their children? Shouldn’t those parents made sure the girls were properly attired before setting out and packed up blankets and hot chocolate to help them stay warm?
I’m not sure what other parents would do but I’m more of the type of parent that would have packed up my child and brought them right home, stopping on the way for something warm to drink. And then I guess I would also end up with a freezer full of cookies!

It breaks my heart to see these young kids outside in the cold like that. My husband gave one little girl $40 for 10 boxes IF her mom promised to take her right home - it was SNOWING and they had sold 2 boxes in 1.5 hours!
I would love to see a different route taken by the scouts. It is absurd to have kids out in the weather!
I think it is vERY poor parenting. Why didn't the kids have on mittens and hates? Why wasn't that thought out BEFORE they drove their kids to the store to pimp the cookies? I bet the parents were warm - I saw a dup where the kid had on just her little vest with her badges and the Mom had on a heavey coat, hat and gloves! Poor parenting indeed!
Great article and it sure is true!
really? I think you people are full of it. Who lives in Seattle and isn't prepared for cold, rainy weather to rush upon them at any moment? I don't even live there and I know that it is a rainy city.
and if that is really true, don't put it on the Scouts- put it on the parents.
I am a leader, once took my girls hiking. Hiking, people. Included a "what to wear" sheet and still had one mother drop her girl off in FLIP FLOPS!!! This isn't on Girl Scouts, this is on parents being foolish.
