This morning my son signed up for the summer reading program at our local library. While he's still excited about it, I want to pull together a list of books he might enjoy. Here's where I'm going to start looking.
- The NEA (National Education Association) list of top 100 kids' books--as compiled from a survey of kids.
- The NEA's list of teachers' picks for the top 100 kids' books.
- Michael Morpurgo's lists of the top 100 books kids should read (with separate lists by age group). Morpurgo is a United Kingdom children's book author, so prices are listed in pounds and a few are books not available here, but they're still great lists, and include some books I would never have found otherwise .
- ALA (American Library Association) list of "notable" (worthy) books from 2009. (This list too is divided by ages if you scroll down.)
- The NY Times list of the best illustrated children's books of 2008; that link is a slide show and is fun to browse with your child (or alone).
- NY Public Library's list of 100 favorite kids' books, divided by type (history, humor, science fiction, etc)
Come back tomorrow for great ways to find Maine children's books: some books by Maine authors and some set in Maine.

For summer reading, please encourage your 8-12 year-old to read my latest novel Lessons From the Cape. It's great beach reading, and follows the heart and mind of a 12-year-old male hero whose family vacation brings an unexpected event that changes their lives forever. It's available from www.eloquentbooks.com
