Protect your kids this flu season with Germy Wormy

Spread the word, not the germs!

School is just around the corner, and so is the mounting fear of the H1N1 virus , formerly known as swine flu.  News stations keep talking about a vaccine, but most schools are going to be underway before it is available.  Even then, there is no guarantee that your kiddo won’t get it, and if it’s not H1N1, they will come home with something else for your family to come down with.  What’s a parent to do?

Margaret Back, had a problem.  Illnesses were spread through her family over and over again during the fall and winter months while her little girl was in preschool.  We’ve all heard the term ‘sick and tired of being sick and tired’, and Margaret decided that there has got to be a way to keep her family healthy.  In her research, she learned something that most of our mothers, teachers, and other adult influences never taught us: Cough and sneeze into your elbow.

She took that knowledge and decided that there had to be a way to make teaching it fun to her preschooler, and Germy Wormy was born.  He started out as a character that she drew on a sock that she’d chopped the foot off of so it could slide over her daughter’s elbow.  How creative is that?  The best part was that it worked.  Illness in her family slowed down, but hadn’t stopped.  Then she learned something else: Kiddos can touch as many as 300 surfaces in JUST ONE HALF HOUR.  Wow.  Now she understood that coughing into a little worm wasn’t enough.  There had to be a way to teach her kiddo what germs are, and how to not get them on her hands.

That was when she found Germ Stoppers 5, and used glitter glue to show her daughter how easily germs spread.  That cut down on illnesses even more, but not completely.

Margaret had some of her daughter’s friends over and did a puppet show about germs, and based on the reaction of the children, the Germy Wormy light bulb grew brighter, and Germy Wormy went to her daughter’s school and cut down illnesses in the school almost completely.

Since then, Germy Wormy has grown from an idea and a sock to disposable sleeves and a DVD available around the world.

Germy Wormy is a complete learning system that teaches kids all about germs, what they are, where they are, what they do, and what to do to avoid getting them and sharing them with others.  Best of all, Germy Wormy makes it fun, teaching kiddos that they are feeding their icky germs to a hungry little worm when they cough or sneeze because he is so hungry for them.  Any time you can make learning fun, kids catch on effortlessly.

Germy Wormy offers a guide for teachers and a guide for parents, so whether you have one kiddo, or thirty, you can be prepared on how to make the Germy Wormy program most beneficial.  No matter if you’re buying them for your own kiddos, your daycare center, or your school, Germy Wormy has everything you need.

The American Public Health Association  is putting on Get Ready for the Flu day on September 15th, 2009.  Learn everything you can about avoiding this horrible illness that takes lives every year.  Germy Wormy is integral in passing that information on to your children, but don’t stop there.  Talk to teachers, supervisors, and coaches, and get them involved.

I was lucky enough to be one of the first to preview the ‘Germ Smart for Kids’ DVD with a small group of children that I invited to my home.  The first thing that I would like to note is that the kiddos didn’t move or speak through the whole DVD.  They were glued to the set.  During ‘Germ Smart for Kids’, I handed out Germy Wormy sleeves when they were introduced in the program.  After the DVD was over, they all wanted to watch it again.  After about five times, they decided they’d had their fill, but wore their sleeves all day long, pretend sneezing and coughing into them, and reminding each other when they were doing things that could spread germs.  I had the same group of kids over for four days in a row, and every day they would all ask, “Can we watch Germy Wormy today?”  They also wore Germy Wormy sleeves every day.

When they remind each other about germs, they always said, “Spread the word, not the germs.”

Germy Wormy is taking the world by storm.  Keep an eye out for them to make an appearance on the hit show ‘The Doctors’ on CBS, and in the October issue of Parents Magazine.
