The real poop on swim diapers

Your best protection against a "Code Brown" in the local
pool: Little Swimmers swim diapers. (Photo: Amazon.com)

Swim season is fast upon us here in Orlando, which means it is time to see if the kids have moved up a size in their swimsuits (I'm just hoping that's not the case for me as well). For babies and toddlers, it also means a trip to the store to purchase swim diapers.

For anyone who has never used a swim diaper for their baby or toddler before, there is one important thing to keep in mind: swim diapers only work on containing bowel movements, not urine. If you put your child in swim diaper before driving (or strolling) to the nearest pool, there's a 50/50 chance that you'll end up with a soggy car seat or stroller. Swim diapers aren't loaded up with those water absorbing "crystals" that make modern diapers so miraculously absorbent.

The only downside to swim diapers is how expensive they are, as compared to regular diapers. They are available in bulk quantities at Costco but only buy them in bulk if you plan on doing a lot of swimming with your tot this season (because any child who is in diapers this year will be at least one or two sizes larger--or completely potty-trained--next year).

Pull-ups--the leaner, toddler version of a baby diaper--can be used in a pinch, but they do run the risk of "exploding" with messy (but non-toxic) gelatinous crystals once they become saturated with water, which happens about 10 seconds after your toddler enters the pool. A regular diaper will blow up like a blimp in the pool (and I speak from experience here).

For potty-training preschoolers, keep using the swim diapers until you are absolutely, 100% sure that your child won't defecate in the pool. E. Coli can be spread by fecal matter, which is why a "code brown" (as a YMCA lifeguard once described it to me) means that everybody has to get out of the pool.

    Potty Training book saving!!!!!!
    ________________________________________
Parenting Magazine (March ‘09 issue) & Men’s Health Magazine (Sept. issue) recommends Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day: Proven Secrets of the Potty Pro by Teri Crane. My husband picked us up a copy after reading the article. IT REALLY WORKS!!

Everyone is talking about throwing a "potty party" to potty train a child. I was so desperate; I was willing to do anything. Her book outlines 10 themed parties. What kid doesn't love to play and pretend? All my mommy friends have successfully potty trained their kids with her book too.

Honestly, when I first learned of this book, I thought NO WAY! Maybe this would work on a little girl, but NOT a BOSSY, 2-1/2 year old BOY. NO WAY! Guess what? It REALLY WORKED!!! Teri Crane SAVED MY SANITY!!! Her book was easy to read, funny and extremely helpful. I can't thank Teri enough. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to EVERY parent. It will save you much grief and frustration. Potty training shouldn't be difficult, we as parents make it difficult because we don't know what to do. Teri teaches you. Buy the book, it's the best money you will ever spend

Most amazingly, I had some questions, so I called the author, and she CALLED ME BACK!!
