Spanish doll maker markets breastfeeding Bebe Gloton

of breastfeeding. (Photo credit: Berjuan)

Spanish doll maker Berjuan has introduced a doll that simulates the act of nursing with its young owner. Bebé Glotón, which literally translates to “gluttonous baby,” (although “hungry baby” might be closer to the intended meaning) is a doll that mimics the act of suckling and is packaged with a halter top that girls can wear while pretending to nurse the baby.

The packaging advertises Bebé Glotón as “the first baby doll” and the doll makes crying noises followed by a suckling sound (the “Chup Chup” indicated on the box) when the mouth mechanism is activated. The dolls are available as boys or girls.

A demonstration of Bebé Glotón has been released on YouTube depicting the intended use of the product, with a school-aged girl putting on the halter top over her dress (there are daisies where breasts would be on a grown woman). The girl proceeds to “nurse” the crying baby doll and burp it afterwards. Bebé Glotón is only available in Spain for the cost of 44 Euros (about $66) although the product has attracted a considerable amount of interest throughout the United States and Europe on television and on the Web—so much so that as of this posting, the Berjuan Web site has exceeded its bandwidth.

This is absolutely disgusting. Don't you think that it denigrates and makes a mockery towards the breastfeeding movement? This product can also lead to young girls wanting to be mothers at too young of an age!

It surprising that you gave this product extra and unnecessary exposure.

I think the doll is a good idea. Children are naturally curious about breast feeding, particularly if mom is nursing a younger sibling. This just helps what is already in their imagination. My 3 year old daughter "nurses" a doll and it would just be more fun if the doll suckled like her baby brother does.

That's right - breastfeeding a doll will turn your 10 year old into a sex-crazed baby maker. Much more so than the hundreds of other dolls out there that simulate the mother-child experience through bottle-feeding, diapering, burping, and potty training.

It is surprising that some people claim to be behind a movement and then have the audacity to so blatantly hinder its progress. This doll will no more hinder the breastfeeding movement than would any child who witnesses breastfeeding and reenacts it with their own toys. This toymaker is simply providing a tool for entertainment and positive reenforcement for their young imaginations.

I applaud the toymaker and am proud that at least Spain has the common sense to make such an item available, unlike over-conservative, Puritan America, whose people claim to be so damn enlightened, yet some still harbor the notion that something as natural a part of life as breastfeeding is "disgusting," or "indecent." Grow the hell up.

Hmmm...I breastfed my son, so I am definitely a proponent of breastfeeding. However, the idea of encouraging "practicing" with a young girl, kind of skeeves me out. It's too young - breastfeeding is natural, and should be something that you discuss with your child. At the same time, the whole shirt with faux breasts (the flowers) is kind of weird. And I disagree with Dewhit above (and the profanity is totally inappropriate, too) references regarding being ultra-conservative. Many of us, and as I said, I breastfed my child, think that this is an act that should be kept relatively modest, and not put on display. Natural or not, it's not a game for a girl to practice. Ick.

Bravo to Robyn covering such an oddity, though.

I don't know, I think it's kind of cute. When I heard about it, it made me uncomforatble. But, if I breast feed, why would my daughter bottle feed her doll?
If we really want to see breast feeding accepted as part of the culture, then it's okay for our children to imitate it.
If you are ashamed, you are still sexulaizing NOURISHING YOUR BABY.

I find this really weird and unnecessary for a little girl. We all played with dolls and pretended to be mommies, doctors, firemen and in no way did we have that awareness about breasts..... I agree with Fellow parenting examiner, the flowers are just WEIRD. Kids have enough to learn as it is, why put sex, procreation and breasts at the top of the line?
Putting such sexual related curiosity at such a young age will certainly have its consequences....

I'd rather save the money and have my daughter continue to spontaneously pretend nurse an unautomatic baby doll.

Excuse those of us who feel that this is very inappropriate for children. I have no problem with breastfeeding children...If and I state *hey listen here people* by an ADULT. What is so forward thinking to encourage small children to what to do adult things. We as a society are so eager to teach our children to be adults before they ever have a chance to be CHILDREN!!! So to those who say grow up, I will answer I am but I would like my nieces to be children for a little while longer.

Well, I have a 15 month old and noone in my family had breastfed and when I brought up the topic that I wanted to, everyone was against it. I never exposed to breastfeeding up and so the only babydolls I ever had were "bottled-fed", now I regret that I didnt choose to breastfeed my son, and I think that if these dolls had been around when I was younger and the idea of breastfeeding was more accepted then I would have made a different choice. These dolls are a great thing and people should be more openminded and STOP making a natural thing sexual! Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing, thats what God made boobs for!

I remember being very young and pretending that my doll was breatfeeding - w/o any suckling sounds. I was immitating what I seemed to be appropriate for taking care of "my baby." I believe that all these dolls that do too much take away from the imagination of a child.
The doll itself isn't creepy, the little vest is!

Wouldn't every baby doll make a girl want to be a mother, then?

I agree wih a lot of people on this. I know breast feeding is natural, but, as other people have stated, it could cause the children to want to be mothers at younger ages. Besides, most kids nowadays know this by fourth grade at least. Why spen the seventy dllars on a doll, and not something that's be more sefull to them. Besides, this would take the fun out of playing with dolls. If they use this, the imagination isn't used. When I was the age I played wth dolls, I didn't have the fake bottles, or whatnot. If I want a bottle, I used anything I had that I was allowed to use. That's why God gave us imagination, to use it! And sorry for going a little religious there, but still. Don't tell me to grow up either, because I'm only 13, so, I still am! I've got a few years ahead and plenty of time to grow up.

If you want them to use their imagination then don't buy them anything, they'll imagine with sticks and rocks.

Great comment. I prefer a traditional baby doll over anything electronic, but I see nothing even remotely immoral or inappropriate about this one.

Whats wrong with you people, It is obvious that non of you have breastfeed. I believe this has been the most interesting, and educational thing they have come up to. I support breastfeeding 200% and would not mind having my daughter nurse a doll. At least they are showing them the options to "breastfeed" which is more nutritious than bottle feed babies, not talking about the bond it creates between you and your child. It was about time they come up with this...

BEBE GLOTON ( the breastfeeding doll) is adorable and yes your daughter will be very happy to have one and you will love it. Right now is only available on eBay and there are only a few left. It was also on sale on Amazon but the distributor in the USA only started selling on Amazon a couple of months ago and to be able to sell toys on Amazon for the Christmas season you have to have about 25 sales and he only had like 18 , so it is not available there until after Christmas but on ebay it is not problem or you can just email him at garamchai1@aol.com and pay by check, money order or pay pal. If you buy directly from him you can get it for $105 including shipping in the USA
