Nurse In event: Greenville, SC moms nurse babies outside radio station in protest

Elizabeth Hitchcock nurses outside of the 106.3 radio station on Garlington Road. Photo by Kelly PfeifferMoms with posters and young children in tow began gathering around 9 am this morning outside the main entrance of the WORD 106.3 radio station on Garlington Road in Greenville, SC. They brought their breastfed babies along to nurse in public. “We are here protesting the Lisa and Russ Show,” said Elizabeth Hitchcock,” mom to 9-month old son, Judge.

During a July radio broadcast, Lisa of the Russ and Lisa Show made several statements conveying her extreme displeasure after witnessing a mom nurse a baby in a Chick-Fil-A restaurant at Cherrydale Shopping Center in Greenville.

This morning around 9:20 am, an employee of the WORD 106.3 radio station came out of the building and told the group of moms to leave the radio station property. The “Nurse In” protest then moved across Garlington Road and spread out blankets on a grassy spot, still within view of the radio station.

South Carolina Law Protects Nursing Mothers

Hitchcock brought a poster on which she had printed South Carolina Law (Section 63-5-40) which states: “A woman may breastfeed her child in any location, public or private, where the mother is authorized to be and the act of breastfeeding is exempt from indecent exposure.”

Great job, Mamas! You know what's ironic? No one would bat an eye at pic 5 on the slideshow, but she's showing more boob than any of the nursing moms. How backward is that?

I am the woman in pic 5 and I don't usually dress so immodestly but you hit the nail on the head. That is EXACTLY why I did that. I also had a sign that read "I am showing more breast than a nursing mother." :) I nursed both of my children for a year each and thought this was a wonderful opportunity to support and encourage any woman that is making the choice to breastfeed.

I nursed all three of my children. With the first two I was made to feel very uncomfortable about nursing them in public. I would from time to time take them to the bathroom to nurse in private...then I thought, "who eats in the bathroom? well neither is my baby!" With number 3 I was much older and decided when she was hungry I was feeding-public or private-and didn't care who liked or didn't. I was always covered-sometimes people didn't even know what I was doing. Why has breastfeeding our babies become such a no-no? I commend you all who participated today! Way to bring awareness so others and other mothers won't think of it in such an adverse way!

Great job, Mommies, I am so proud of you. I read Lisa's bio on the Russ and Lisa Show's link above, I wonder how her view on breastfeeding fits in with all the "credits" she boasts about. It says she is has a calming, caring and conservative voice and trusted for her professionalism and community concern, she doesn't sound like she is living up to her claims. I didn't hear the show personally as I don't even listen to that station, but I am offended by her comments none the less. Yes Nicole I am glad you showed your photo, you go girl. We see way too much cleavage everywhere we look and it is not from mothers feeding their children as they were designed for. I hope to read of Lisa's heartfelt apology but if she boosts the ratings by her careless comments, then who know what subject she will raise next. I pray she will recongnize her harm and do the Christian thing. It is a shame that people claiming to be Christians but not walking the walk give us a bad light. Be encouraged!

I heard about this from Australia! Man what I would have given to be able to fly over there and join into your nurse in with my 5 year old - yes he still feeds, I bet she also has some weird backward out of date comments about extended feeders too. I love the photo of the little girl with her doll in the sling, just gorgeous! Well done ladies YOU ROCK!!!!! I heard her show and frankly think she did the whole thing for ratings, saddest thing I thought she putting her small minded breasfeeding predjudice onto her daughter who was with her and there's another generation that probably won't breastfeed - althoguh I am hoping she rebels against her mum ;)

I love that you had that sign, Nicole! I wish they would have shown it in the pic.
