Elizabeth Hitchcock: Organizer of Nurse In, peaceful protest in Greenville, SC and other US cities

Nursing moms from the Greenville area and elsewhere brought their kids and assembled outside of the WORD 106.3 radio station on Garlington Road Monday morning. When a baby or toddler got hungry, moms breastfed their children.

The “Nurse In” event was planned by nursing Mom, Elizabeth Hitchcock as a way to protest negative comments about public breastfeeding spoken on air by radio show host, Lisa of the Russ and Lisa Show. Hitchcock organized a facebook page for the “Nurse In” event which was held in Greenville, SC and six other cities across the US.

The protesters first assembled outside the main entrance to the WORD 106.3 radio station building, but were soon asked to vacate the property. The group of nursing moms and breastfeeding advocates then moved to a location across the street from the radio station building.

Purpose of the "Nurse In": Elizabeth Hitchcock Comments

Hitchcock began organizing the “Nurse In” event a few weeks ago from her home in Batesville Mississippi. She came to Greenville to nurse her child outside of the radio station where the comments were aired. “We want to let her (Lisa) know she’s not going to deter us with her negative comments.” Hitchcock sat on a blanket across from the radio station holding 9 month old son, Judge on her lap. “Just like bottle feeding mothers, we have a right to nurse our babies. All we’re doing is feeding our child the way God intended,” she said.

When asked about her goal for the “Nurse In” event, Hitchcock replied, “We’re not looking for an apology or anything. If one person was considering not breastfeeding publicly because of this and we changed her mind, it was worth it.”

At the “Nurse In” event, Examiner asked Lisa if there is anything that radio show, Lisa can do to make things right. “No, I understand she stated her opinion, but she crossed the line when she started bashing us and discriminating against us,” said Hitchcock.

Elizabeth Hitchcock can be contacted through the facebook page that she set up for the event, entitled “Peaceful Protest for the Russ & Lisa Morning Show-Nurse In".
