Thanksgiving marks the start of the holiday season. A season of reflecting and giving thanks for the good things in our lives. I t means spending time with family and friends but for many, it can also mean the beginning of a stressful time. Don't let stress ruin your holidays. By following a few simple tips and having realistic expectations, the holiday season can be enjoyable and memorable.
- Don't have unrealistic expectations. Everything will not be perfect no matter how hard you try so accept that things might not go as planned.
- Make a guest list. Know how many people you are cooking for, make note of any food allergies or any special food requests or drinks.
- Create a meal plan. Find your recipes and make a grocery list.
- Shop early. Avoid the stress of long lines and crowds.
- If cooking isn't your thing, check out the local grocery store for pre-made holiday meals or have a potluck. For example, asks guest to bring: drinks, dessert, bread, appetizers and anything else that you plan to serve.
- Clean out your refrigerator. You will need to make room for the turkey and trimmings.
- Major housecleaning can be started early and touch-ups can be made as the holiday comes closer. Make room for the possibility of overnight guests.
- Decorating can also be done early so that you can enjoy the decorations throughout November.
- Prepare the side dishes for Thanksgiving dinner in advance and store them in the refrigerator to be reheated.
- Keep children busy by letting them help. They can set the table, bake cookies or stir things you are cooking. Enjoy the time with them.
- Unpack good china ahead of time or decide what dishes and utensils will be used for dinner.
- Get a good night's sleep before Thanksgiving day. It will help you to feel refreshed and ready.
- Do any cooking left for Thanksgiving Day early in morning so that there is time to rest before guests arrive.
Creating a stress free environment for the sake of everyone is something each one of us should try to achieve. Try to keep your thoughts on the meaning of the day and on the things you are thankful for. Remember, a meal comes and goes but the people you are with are the real reason for the celebration.
