Daily dose of random parenting advice: Teaching responsibility
Children who are taught to do household chores learn to assume responsibility, overcome obstacles and take pride in their own independence. Here's a few suggestions to try with your children to get them involved:
- Show them how the chore is done. Demonstrate the right way to make their bed, feed the pets, set the table, load/unload the dishwasher, etc.
- Schedule some chores that have to be completed daily, such as making the bed and some chores that only have to be completed once a week, such as taking the garbage out to be picked up.
- Make the responsibility seem like a privilege. Kids will be more eager to help out if they feel special than if just "ordered" to do something.
