New area farmer's market

A new Birmingham farmer's market has taken root in Shelby County.  Every Saturday morning from 7am to 12pm, roughly 12 local growers come to sell their fresh produce in the parking lot of Faith Presbyterian Church off of Valleydale Road.

The market is a joint effort of local urban designer and real estate developer, Matt Churnock and Jed Park, who have teamed up with the Farmers Market Authority of Alabama.  "We are so excited to bring more exposure and profit to local Alabama farmers," said Churnock. "This is the best way to bring a community together, create a public space and support growers all at the same time. It's a win-win situation."

Shoppers can find produce such as peaches, okra, tomatoes, collard greens, cucumbers, peppers, watermelon, and berries.  Some of the local vendors include Durbin Farms, Continental Bakery, Boutwell Farms (a rare fresh meat vendor), and one of Birmingham's only certified organic vendors, Cricket Adams. There are also several local artists selling jewelry, pottery, and paintings.

A few upcoming special events at the Valleydale Market will include:

  • 4th of July Festival Celebration
  • Cooking demonstrations from local chef, Chris Hastings (Aug 22)
  • Floral arranging demonstrations and cooking tips for kids (TBA)

Valleydale Farmers Market is located at 4601 Valleydale Road, Birmingham, AL 35242.  For more information, contact Jed Park jpark@brighamwilliams.com.  Also check their group on Facebook at the Valleydale Farmers Market group.
