Leprechauns are make-believe little Irish fairies. A leprechaun looks like a small old man about 2 feet tall. He dresses like a shoemaker, wears a hat and an apron. Leprechauns are believed to be aloof and unfriendly, and according to legend, the leprechaun posses a hidden pot of gold. If you can catch a Leprechaun, you can force him to tell the whereabouts of his pot of gold. However, you must be careful. You must keep your eye on him every second. If not, the leprechaun will trick you and disappear. Your hopes of find his pot of gold vanishes with him.

How to Make Leprechaun Trap
Begin your family celebration by building a Leprechaun trap.
Start by gathering your supplies. Items from around the house will do; shoebox, glitter, Popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, markers, construction paper, wrapping paper, glue, egg carton, tape etc. Your children will love creating and building the trap. Everyone knows that leprechauns are quick and crafty….So you'll have to lure them in with bait…a piece of gold (chocolate coin), a penny or a 4 leaf clover even with Lucky Charms cereal! Leave your trap out the night before St. Patty's Day and in the morning see what's occurred.

Then make a Leprechaun Mint Drink
Ingredients:
• 1 quart mint ice cream, softened
• 1 cup milk
• 2 crushed mint Oreo cookies
• 2 cans (12 ounces each) lemon-lime soda, chilled
• 1 to 2 cups crushed iced
• Mint cookies, optional
Directions: In a blender, blend the ice cream, Oreo cookies until blended. Blend in soda and ice. Pour into chilled glasses. Garnish with a mint cookie.

Then share a few Leprechaun books with your family:

by Linda Shute
Jack and the Leprechaun
by Ivan Robertson, Katy Bratun (Illustrator)
