Pumpkin History

It is believed that pumpkins originated in North America. Seeds have been found in Mexico dating back to 7000 to 5500 B.C. Pumpkin originally got it’s name from the Greek word “pepon” which means large melon. The French changed “pepon” to “pompon. “Pompon” was changed by the English “Pumpion.” It was the American colonist that changed “pumpion” into “pumpkin.”

Centuries before the pilgrims landed, Native American Indians used pumpkins. Roasting strips to eat; and drying strips of pumpkin to weave into mats. Our favorite, pumpkin pie originated when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, then filled with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in the how ashes of a dying fire.

Hey Rhonda - love the recipes. I'm all about pumpkin recipes! It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is one of my fav's! Pepitas, that is roasted pumpkin seeds, are supposedly an excellent source of Iron...which is probably why I crave them so much.

Thanks for this informative article - good stuff! I'd heading to the pumpkin patch down the street to get some goods and try out your recipes! ;-)
