"Psychic Wins Lottery" - the headline you'll never see. My wife, Joyce, attributes that joke to a Jay Leno monologue. But the idea always intrigued me.

Okay  - any readers out there want to get in on a competition? I'll name a date for the evening pull of the three-digit lottery game here in Illinois. Readers will send in their three-digit number pick. I'll publish all of the entries here - including mine - and we'll see if we can prove Mr. Leno wrong.

Here is my history on the subject. Back in 1992, telling psychic-related stories to a friend one day, he challenged me to use my skills with the lottery. I told him I wasn't interested, but later as I talked to Joyce about it, I decided to privately see if it was possible.

Illinois Lottery beware. But it has an ending in your favor - no one's getting rich off choosing lottery numbers with their psychic skills these days that I've heard about. But in 1992 and again in 2005, I came close.

The Lottery Numbers: 1992

One Saturday night in November 1992, I was sitting at my dining room table talking with Tom, a neighborhood friend. We were talking about my psychic experiences over the years and Tom posed a question. “Why can’t you use this extra sense to choose tomorrow’s lottery numbers?” I immediately became defensive with the question, saying that it wasn’t personal and that I would be exploiting the gift. But after Tom left my home that evening, I began to think about what he said. I talked to Joyce briefly about why asking for lottery numbers and making money off of something like this would be bad, and then made my way into the bedroom to close myself off for a short meditation. I told Joyce that I was going to meditate specifically for the lottery numbers.

I don’t think my mediation lasted very long because the numbers came to me quickly. I like to set the stage when I meditate and tell myself exactly how I want something to happen. In this case, I thought about the lottery and the three-digit numbers that are pulled six times each week (every day except Sunday). I thought to myself that as I closed my eyes and saw a blank, black screen, that I wanted the three numbers for Monday’s pull to appear white. After just several minutes of relaxation, three numbers appeared.

I immediately sat up and wrote the numbers down and then told Joyce the numbers.

The following day Joyce and I and Laine were driving to Joyce’s sister’s house and Joyce brought the subject up. Joyce asked me what the three numbers were and I again told her. She suggested that I drop her and Laine off and go out and buy a ticket for that number and then rejoin the group. I agreed, but by the time we reached Diane’s house I had forgotten about Joyce’s suggestion and went inside.

On Monday night, just minutes before the lottery numbers were pulled at 7 p.m., I remembered the numbers I had thought of on Saturday night. I turned the television on and called Joyce. We watched together as the numbers were drawn. My numbers were drawn.

Joyce asked immediately if I had purchased any tickets. I hadn’t.

Then Joyce asked if I could do that again. I went into the bedroom and repeated my meditation exercise and again raised three numbers. I told Joyce the numbers and she repeated that I should play them.

The following night, Tuesday, I remembered the lottery meditation from the previous night at about one minute before the lottery broadcast. Joyce was sitting in the bedroom at the time. I went into the bedroom, told her the numbers that would be drawn that night, and turned on the television.

The numbers I had chosen were again picked.

“Did I play the numbers?” Joyce asked again. “No, sorry,” I said.

This was too much for Joyce. She had heard the Illinois State Lottery numbers for two consecutive days prior to their being picked and we hadn’t won a penny. She left me in the bedroom alone that night and asked that I please meditate again for the Wednesday night draw. I repeated the meditation and came up with three numbers. This time, though, I went out and
played ten dollars. My winnings, I figured, at 500 to one, would bring me $5,000.

I lost my ten dollars when the winning numbers were pulled Wednesday. Joyce suggested that I keep trying, but I retired my lottery career. I’m not sure why.

Lottery Numbers: 2005

Reviewing the anomalous stories from my past in May of 2005 I was reminded of the two consecutive days in a row that I correctly picked the daily lottery number in Illinois and decided it was time for a second and larger test. This time around I decided to expand the test to three states simultaneously, in each case using the evening game of the state’s daily three-digit
lottery number. I choose the states California, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. I lived in Illinois and had relatives in both California and Pennsylvania. I also decided to email the chosen numbers for all games to four people using four different email boxes at one or more days in advance so that the time stamp on the email was clearly in advance of the drawing. I also decided that it
would be okay to bet money myself and to allow others to bet money on the games. I originally was going to run the test for 30 days, but stopped after 12 consecutive days.

The results? Like the first time in 1992, the results started out very good and excited the group, but in this round quickly dropped off until we realized we would never see the headline, “Psychic Wins Lottery.” But we had hope in those beginning days.

On Day One in California, May 25, I predicted 088 and 084 came up. On Day Two, I chose 835 for California and 308 came up; hitting two of three numbers two days in a row. But in Pennsylvania I chose 652 on Day Two and 265 hit, a winner, although no one in Pennsylvania played. On Day Three I chose 822 in Pennsylvania and 228, a hit and $300 win – which the relative split with me. On Day Four I chose 237 in Illinois and 793 came up – another two-digit hit. The remaining results were bad – guessing only one digit correctly or no digits at all – except two more two-digit hits in California: Day Six I chose 803 and 813 came up; and Day 11 I chose 708 and 782 came up.

I have to say that I am convinced that I was tuned into the lottery results during those first four days. With California showing two correct digits two days in a row and then Pennsylvania hitting two days in a row, assuming you played the numbers boxed instead of straight (we played both ways).
