When you are looking for locations in Indianapolis that are known for paranormal activity, there is one place that comes up most often. Central State Hospital, formerly known as the Indiana Hospital for the Insane, was established in 1827, but did not open until November of 1848. The hospital is located on 100 acres on the outskirts of Indianapolis.
Central State Hospital became vacant as of 1994. The Pathology Department building is now home to the Indiana Medical History Museum. Most of the buildings have been demolished. The ones still standing are in ruins. They have been severely vandalized. Central State Hospital is OFF limits. There is no trespassing and violators will be arrested.
Since treatment for mental illness was still in its early stages, the use of restraints was common with patients that tended to be most violent. Patients known to be difficult, violent, or were criminally insane were held in the basements or dark rooms off the vast tunnels, which connect various buildings, with chains and shackles on the walls. Patients were kept in dark, inhumane conditions, and retraining practices were said to be barbaric.
There are many stories associated with Central State Hospital. In the late 1970's my mom worked as a Pharmacy Tech in the Bahr Treatment Center. In the last few years i have started asking her to tell me stories of this place. One story that sticks out is about a boy "Larry" who was hit by a car when he was 10 years old. He delivered papers and one morning he was hit by a car and it left him brain damaged. He was a good kid and nice to everyone. One day another patient came running in saying "Larry" had fell in the fountain and was dead. Come to find out the other patient beat him to death.
Paranormal activity is very common and has been witnessed by many. Claims of activity were screaming, shadows of entities have been seen throughout the premises, the coal conveyor turns on and off by itself, noises coming from the basement f the Pathology building, footsteps, moans, and an entity dressed in a robe has been seen running down the halls of the dorms.
There are many websites you can look up to find out more information on Central State Hospital. Take a look at You Tube for some videos.

Holy moly on picture #2! Sounds like the perfect place to investigate.
It is the perfect place. I only wish I was able to do a full investigation. I have tried, but under no circumstances is anyone allowed in the buildings anymore. When we took the picture of the bloody bathroom, we also found an axe with blood on it by the kitchen. We are not sure if the blood was real, but it sure did look like it. It added to the creep factor!
Maybe you could go back and get a swab of the blood to have it tested. Pretty freaky!
We actually thought about that while we were there. It looked an awful lot like blood, but it could have been other stuff as well.
Got something to say?
