Alan Power of Merseyside, UK lost his case that he had been fired from the Greater Manchester Police for his religious beliefs. Power won a court case not too long ago, establishing spiritualism as a religious body. The previous ruling brought spiritualist beliefs into the Equality and Employment Regulations, which protects followers of spiritualism from being fired for their religious beliefs.
The BBC quoted a police spokesman as saying “we welcome all races and religions.”
Power and his attorneys felt otherwise. The judge in the wrongful firing case disagreed. During the recent court case more details surrounding why Power had been dismissed came out.
A Merseyside Police sergeant witnessed Power become sexually aroused while participating in a police training exercise. Power was playing the role of a shoplifter and was being frisked by an officer in training when the incident took place. Apparently information about the frisking incident did not come out until October 2008. Power was fired three weeks later. Why the sergeant and others waited to report Power’s behavior is still unclear.
Power was also accused of distributing unauthorized research materials to police officers. Apparently one of the subjects discussed in the materials was the World Trade Center attacks. More details of the contents of the research materials were not made available.
According to the Manchester Evening News Power showed officers a presentation on whether stress contributed to paranormal beliefs. The presentation reportedly included a slide about rape that included sound effects of heavy breathing.
The evidence put forth was enough for the tribunal to agree with the Greater Manchester Police, who had lost the previous court battle over whether spiritualist beliefs fell under the Equality and Employment Regulations.
