Ghostly Tales of the Superstition Mountains, Arizona

Apache Junction, Arizona-

The 'Superstition Mountains' is a place where legends and superstitions come alive to tell their ghostly tales.

Apparently, as legend goes, back in the 1800's, a man named "Jacob Waltz" found a gold mine and died before he could reveal where its location was.

The Indians also inhabited the area and created a legend of the "Tuar-Tums" or "Little People" who live below in hidden tunnels and caves throughout and below the mountain range. They were believed to be guarding the mountain from strangers who dared to venture to far within its craggy rocks and caves seeking to find it's hidden treasures.

There is scores of openings, caves and crevices through-out the mountainous terrain. There are also many creatures such as rattlesnakes, scorpions, mountain lions, coyotes that you don't want an encounter with. Why even the cacti can be somewhat painful if you get to close!

Some people who have ventured into the superstitions have claimed to be shot at. Could this be the ghost of the old "Lost Dutchman Gold Mine" hidden somewhere amongst its range? Perhaps it's just a half crazed, gold seeking, living being, hoping to find the mine himself and trying to detour others off with his bullets. Whatever the case, the old mine has never been found, if it even exists.

Is it just a legend?

If you plan to ascend and explore the mountains, it’s best to be very cautious and prepared… There is some nasty wildlife up there and the terrain is full of crevices and caves where anything could be lurking. Whether a crazed human being, the Indian’s tale of Tuar-Tums, wild animals or an old ghost from the mountains past!

The land is owned now by the government and there are restrictions to its use. If you did by chance find the old mine, you would never be able to keep the gold. It would belong solely to the government.

Also, if you should decide to visit the Superstition Mountain area, make a point to visit the old "Goldfield Ghost Town". The recent owner acquired the ghost-town back in the 1980's and has been fixing it up ever since. Outside a skeletal body from its old past had been discovered while renovations went on to reconstruct the town.

The owner has explored the Superstition mountainous range and has some really great adventures and enlightening tales to share with the visitors to Goldfield!

The Ghost town now gets thousands of tourists yearly.

To visit the Superstition mountains go east from Phoenix, to the town of Apache Junction, Arizona. From there you can get your bearings and see the mountain range.

Don't forget to visit "Goldfield Ghost Town" while in the area, to take a big step back in time to the days of the "Wild West" and the miners that lived there!
