Susan Thoms in Time out during a rehersal in Boquete Panama
Boquete Panama is blessed with an assemblage of people from around the world will skills to match their diversity. One of many areas in which I have no expertise is theater. The closest I have come to a production since elementary school was having an awful TV movie filmed in my Tucson home in 1980. The movie, called, The Day the Loving Stopped, demonstrated the utter boredom of television production, everyone was bored. The high point of each day was lunch followed by snacks; at least the food was good. Take one through one hundred until a minute of video could be shot to the directors satisfaction.
Live theater is different, one take, one live opportunity to do it right. Heather and I had the opportunity to go to the third rehearsal of an upcoming Boquete performance. The play, Eleemosynary, by Lee Blessing.
The play has a cast of three talented Boquetenos; Susan Thoms, Dana Applegate and Amber Sherrard, playing three generations of one family. The play is directed by Jim Hatch, who also directed the fantastic performance of the Vagina Monologues in Boquete and does a local class for actors.
The play is going to be fun, the rehearsal was a joy to watch
We in Boquete are very fortunate to have many talented people of all ages living here and contributing to the cultural environment.
Eleemosynary, which I did find in Merriam Webster shapes up like this:
* Main Entry: el·ee·mo·sy·nary
* Pronunciation: \?e-li-?mä-s?-?ner-?, -?m?-; -?mä-z?-\
* Function: adjective
* Etymology: Medieval Latin eleemosynarius, from Late Latin eleemosyna alms — more at alms
* Date: circa 1616
: of, relating to, or supported by charity” No wonder English is so difficult to master!
Eleemosynary will not be put on by the BCP. This is a further tribute to our community. Boquete can support independent efforts to produce quality theater in addition to production by Community Theater. The location has not yet been selected. The play will go on at the beginning of October, unless Dana falls from that chair and really breaks a leg. Based upon the third rehearsal Eleemosynary will be stunning.
Next, I would love to see a Spanglish production, something open and affordable to the entire Boquete community?

Comments
I will be in Boquete for the entire month of March 2010. Hope there is a production then. I too do musicals here at the Lake of the Ozarks. If I lived there permanently, I would surely try out. See you all in March !
