Vietnam almost did not have a representative to the Miss Universe pageant.

After overcoming resistance from the Vietnamese government, the Hoan Vu Company elected Yen Vo Miss Vietnam and prepared her for the Bahamas.

The 21-year-old model is trilingual and has made a favorable impression in every nation she has visited.

The Miss Universe pageant will be broadcast Aug. 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
