New laws protect gay and lesbian rights in Salt Lake City

Two new laws go into effect today, April 2, defending gay rights in Salt Lake City. The ordinances will protect residents from being discriminated against based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.

The first ordinance "relates to unlawful discriminatory employment practices based on sexual orientation or gender identity." The second ordinance "relates to unlawful discriminatory housing practices based on sexual orientation or gender identity."

The new legislation also outlines procedures for individuals who encounter discrimination in these areas. The resolution process includes mediating and assessing fines when applicable.

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker signed the ordinances last November following a unanimous vote by the Salt Lake City Council to adopt the laws. "The complete support of the Council on this legislation depicts the dedication our City government has to furthering our goals for a cohesive community," said JT Martin, Council Chair.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unexpectedly supported the legislation last November. "The issues before you tonight are the rights of people to have a roof over their heads and the right to work without being discriminated against," said Michael Otterson, spokesman for the LDS Church, in a statement to the Council.

Mayor Ralph Becker released a statement via press release yesterday. "These ordinances demonstrate our determination to foster an environment of good will and acceptance welcoming every member of the community as an integral part of our Great American City. Everyone in Salt Lake City will benefit from the protections these ordinances provide."

City leaders believe that the new ordinances will serve as a model for other communities throughout Utah and the nation that are working to pass similar legislation. To review the complete ordinances, click here.
