SALT LAKE CITY - Authorities are searching for a hit and run suspect who may be responsible for killing a toddler in Taylorsville Friday night.
Witnesses say Vicsayra Maribel Garcia was playing at the edge of a street outside her home, when the driver of a white minivan made a U-turn and hit her. Family members were gathered nearby, but were unable to reach the one-year-old in time.
The accident occurred near 800 West and 4600 South around 7:30 p.m. Taylorsville Police Detective Shannon Bennett said witnesses reported that the driver didn't stop to see if the child was okay. She just took off.
The suspect is a Latina woman in her 20s, and witnesses say that she frequents the neighborhood. "Apparently the suspect comes through the area every three days and sells miscellaneous items, corn, shaved ice, tamales," Bennett said. "We're hoping a neighbor can help us out to identify this person."
Investigators say the woman may not be aware that she hit the child, or she may have been scared and fled the scene.
Family members and friends gathered Saturday evening for a candlelight vigil. Stuffed animals, toys, and candles were placed in the area where the little girl died.
The white minivan is believed to be a 1997 or 1998 Dodge Caravan with tinted windows. There is rust on the bottom panels of the vehicle, and the doors have black molding. Taylorsville Police are asking anyone with information to call 801-743-7000.
