United States Representatives Jared Polis (D-CO) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) have joined 70 members of Congress in signing a letter meant to combat network neutrality.
The letter, reportedly penned by Representative Gregory Meeks (D-NY), encourages the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to ignore a public call for neutral Internet access, saying instead that Broadband giants like Verizon Communications should be able to restrict access for paying users at their discression. Meeks has received over $45,000 in contributions from Verizon.
Government mandates that guarantee unhindered access have been suggested as a means to ensure that a caste system does not develope wherein users who pay higher monthly fees gain more and faster access to the Internet.
