December Full Moon 2009

Long Nights Moon
Magnus Borgmann

Pagans of all stripes honour the moon in its changing phases, and many acknowledge that each moon of the year brings with it a certain energy. The Full Moon in December is known by many names including The Cold Moon, The Long Night’s Moon, The Bitter Moon, The Snow Moon, The Oak Moon, The Rain & Wind Moon and even The Peach Moon.

Depending on your culture of origin, you might consider choosing an energy to focus on during your Full Moon celebration, whether your celebration consists of some quiet moon gazing with a glass of wine, or a full blown Esbat complete with cast circle, ritual tools, robes and regalia.

The December Full Moon is a good moon for reflecting on the long dark months to come, and the promise of light inherent in the coming solstice. Some view this moon as being an excellent time to perform personal cleansing rituals to aid us in becoming clearer and less burdened by that which no longer serves us. This can be seen as preparation for the months when we might find ourselves spending more time in introspection and meditation - activities that are appropriate for the ‘dark’ or ‘waxing’ half of the year.

Patti Wigington, the Paganism/Wicca guide at About.Com has a lovely write up on the “Long Nights Moon”, including suggested ways to celebrate.

However you celebrate the full moon in December, may your heart be filled with the light through the dark half of the year. May the dark nights bring insights
