On December 31, 2009, the planet will be blessed with a Blue Moon on New Year’s Eve. In folklore, the second full moon in a month is considered ‘good luck’. Wishes made on a blue moon have more ‘oomph’ than than those made on a regular full moon. Rituals conducted on a blue moon can be imbued with more power as a result. Combining a blue moon with the high energy of New Year’s Eve can be very powerful.
Here are some suggestions for putting the power of this combination to work for you:
Make Wishes - Spend some time on December 31st writing out a list of wishes for yourself in the coming year. When the list is complete, write a ‘good copy’ with fine ink on pretty paper. Roll the paper into a scroll, tie it with a blue ribbon, and during the night when the full moon is visible, hold the scroll up in the moon’s light and ask for blessings upon your wishes.
Hold a Giveaway - Clean out your closets and ask your friends to do the same. Gather up all the things you no longer need or use. Invite your friends over with their collection of things that they no longer need or use. Put it all in the middle of a blanket on the floor. All participants can then share their wealth while also releasing what no longer serves them. If there are things leftover, bundle them up and donate them to a local charity.
Calendar Blessings - If you use a daybook, calendar, or other method of organizing your time, put them out to catch the rays of the blue moon so they might be charged with its power. The same can be done if you are in the habit of starting a new journal on January 1st.
Blue Moon Elixir - Fill a bottle or jar with pure spring water and leave it where it will catch the light of the blue moon. This water will be charged with both the energy of the New Year and of the ‘Wish Moon’. Use the water to perform self-blessings during the year to come.
Host A Wishing Party - Invite your friends over for a potluck dinner, and spend some time making wishes for one another. Blessing our friends with wishes can be powerful magick. If you want a record of the wishes made, provide paper and pens with the name of each participant at the top. Each friend can write their wishes on the paper and your friends can go home with the list, post it some place visible, frame it and hang it up somewhere, or preserve it their journals or books of shadows.
Consult the Oracle - The Full Moon is known to increase psychic ability. A Blue Moon can be doubly powerful. Pull a card or rune for each month of the year and record it in your journal so you can get a forecast of what challenges and opportunities you can look forward to in the upcoming year.
However you choose to celebrate the Blue Moon this New Year’s Eve, may your journey into 2010 be blessed with prosperity, health, and wishes come true.

Once in a Blue Moon comes a writer like you! Great ideas and I will be sure to be using one of them in my own New Year's Blue Moon ritual!
