Hubble images and humility

When ancient pagans looked to the night sky, they saw stars, moon, and the occasional comet.  They saw gods and seasons and changes in constellations if they paid close attention.

Mostly what they beheld was the vastness of their world.  How humble such vastness can make one feel.  In our world of close images, unbelievable focus and seeing to the smallest iota of matter, the images from the Hubble Telescope show us how small our place really is as humans in the grand scheme.  These images are what the night sky was to our ancestors.

Hubble is celebrating twenty years at the moment and if you explore the sites and images available from the Hubble telescope, you will find yourself in awe of how vast and how beautiful is the world.  Nasa, Canada and other participants in the Hubble Project have given we puny humans much to ponder. Little did we know...

Through email notices received from pagan readers, at least three different gatherings have been planned to celebrate the incredible images Hubble sends to us, allowing us glimpses at a world so vast and amazing, that without these images, we never could have imagined such life, movement.

Two of these gatherings are planned out of town and the participants hope for clear night skies.  The other has chosen a trip to the conservatory near their city, to enjoy a real look through a massive telescope.

Pagan energy embraces the earth and Her accoutrement.  We take as a package, the earth, the sky, the heavens and beyond.  In pagan hearts beats a corresponding rhythm to the energy of Gaia.  The rhythm beats in all humans.  It is part of who we are, what energy animates us. Some recognize it as a part of their life, others do not.

No matter what pagan path we might follow, whether wiccan or druid, natural pagan or ritual... whether we use symbols or dance, old texts or new,  we cannot help but be humbled by what Hubble sends us.  Far from a negative feeling, ancient skies or Hubble images, pagans have been connecting to their existence by what's around them.

Wander through the image galleries at Hubble and feel your connection.
