MTV Networks Virtual Laguna Beach Honored with Emmy Gold

Distributed by Press Release

NEW YORK (Map) - NEW YORK, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- MTV Networks' Music Group, a division of Viacom (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B), today proudly announced that its "Virtual Laguna Beach" virtual world last night was awarded the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Technology & Engineering Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Media Technology for Creation of Nontraditional Programs or Platforms. MTV Networks is the first major media/entertainment company to earn an Emmy for a virtual property.

"With Virtual Laguna Beach, we're pushing the boundaries of technology, creating first-of-their-kind experiences that bring our fans closer to the music, talent and on-air franchises they love," said Van Toffler, President of MTV Networks Music, Logo and Films Group. "We're proud of what our virtual team has accomplished and thank NATAS for their recognition."

Launched in September 2006, Virtual Laguna Beach (VLB) immediately revolutionized the way fans of MTV's popular on-air franchise "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County" went beyond passive viewing and consumption to active engagement with programming. MTV Networks worked with Makena Technologies, creator of the popular social virtual world There.com, to develop VLB. VLB has since spawned numerous other 3D experiences, including Virtual Hills, Virtual Pimp My Ride, Virtual Real World, Virtual Newport Harbor, Virtual Kaya, the Virtual VMAs, and the newly launched Virtual Skatepark and Virtual Lower East Side.

Within each world, viewers can enjoy shopping, club-hopping, and programmed events that mirror the on-air story arcs, as well as weekly in- world appearances by cast members and musical guests. With music at the heart of each virtual world, viewers can do things like club-hop, watch videos, start their own bands, interact with established artists and create their own clothing just like the reality stars they see on MTV. Cingular/AT&T, Pepsi and Procter & Gambles' Secret brand were among the first in-world sponsors.

In addition to VLB and its sister properties, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids & Family Group boasts two youth-targeted virtual properties: the original virtual world for tweens, Neopets (www.neopets.com), and one of the fastest growing virtual world for kids, Nicktropolis. With more than 40 million global memberships registered, Neopets is the largest global youth-focused virtual world where members care for their "virtual pets." Nicktropolis combines everything kids love: casual gaming, video and chat all, into one. Featuring kids' favorite Nick properties, it delivers the ultimate kids' playground with non-branded destinations, gaming, video and personalization.
