Prometheus Research, a leader in biomedical research informatics, has been using a form of its HT//SQL software for its biomedical research customers, including leading universities and private foundations, which use the tool to analyze and share research data with colleagues through a simple, easy-to-navigate, web-based URL. With the commercial launch of HT//SQL, Prometheus envisions extending the benefits of the software to businesses, government agencies, and other data-centric organizations that recognize the power of data-driven intelligence but struggle with issues of cost and access.
"In the past, data consumers had to trade power for ease of use," said Andrzej Pienczykowski, Executive Vice President of Product Strategy, Prometheus Research. "They either learned to be a programmer or DBA, or they lived with limitations of the front-end web application," said Pienczykowski. "Prometheus HT//SQL truly democratizes data. Anyone who can type a URL can now query a database. It's the perfect solution for organizations that want their employees--or even the general public--to be able to leverage the full value of data without expending great amounts of energy or overtaxing their IT department."
By translating the language of the web (HTTP) into the language of databases (SQL), Prometheus HT//SQL eliminates many of the traditional barriers to data access. Users of HT//SQL-enabled databases can browse, search, share, and develop new applications using an interface that is familiar and ubiquitous--the Internet browser.
HT//SQL: Fast, Secure, Easy To Use
The Prometheus HT//SQL server is installed alongside a database and respects the database's existing configuration and security scheme. HT//SQL users create URLs following simple rules, and the server translates them into SQL queries, returning the results in a variety of browser- and application-ready formats like HTML, XML, JSON, and CSV.
For more advanced users, HT//SQL offers a powerful range of SQL commands and functions. Communication both ways is via HTTP (or HTTPS), eliminating the need for an extra application layer. HTSQL provides an easy and cost-effective alternative to custom application development or enterprise re-architecture, according to Pienczykowski.
"It's a data-hungry world," he said. "There are so many new ways to use data, from Web 2.0 to mobile applications, but many organizations still struggle with how to free up the data without compromising security. With HT//SQL, organizations can pick the data they want to share and have it on the web in less than an hour. Compare that to creating web services or writing--and maintaining--a large number of web applications."
Prometheus HT//SQL is the creation of Clark Evans, Prometheus Research's Chief Technology Officer, who is widely known in the open source community as a co-creator of the YAML language. Prometheus HT//SQL is available to users of Oracle and other commercial databases for a license fee, along with a full range of professional services, technical support and training.
