THURSDAY, JULY 9: ACROSS THE U.S. ON A HORSE

Profile America -- Thursday, July 9th. New York City newspapers on this day in 1911 were full of stories about a young woman named Nan Jane Aspinwall -- who the day before completed a horseback ride from San Francisco across the entire U.S., the first woman to accomplish the feat. She left San Francisco on September 1, 1910 and arrived in New York 301 days later -- after a trip of 4,500 miles in all sorts of weather. When Aspinwall made her journey of endurance, there were nearly 20 million horses in the U.S., and 640,000 cars and trucks. Now, it's estimated there are just over 9 million horses in the country -- and more than 244 million cars and trucks. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov.
